With lines that
you can quote on a daily basis and a theme song that just sticks in your head, Ghostbusters
is a movie to watch. The line "Who you gonna call?" is well-used in
real life and even in the movie world as a tribute to the theme music. Ghostbusters
has been tagged as one of the best comedies of 1984. The movie used a lot of
special effects to pass its message across, and the powerful acting of Bill
Murray (as Peter) made this movie so infectious that as soon as you pass by
while it’s running on TV, you just take a seat to watch it again.
Written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, the movie is about three eccentric parapsychologists in New York City who start a ghost-catching business. The movie's original idea, written by Aykroyd, was a little too outlandish to work as it featured a group of Ghostbusters traveling through time and going to other dimensions to fight ghosts. The group used wands instead of proton packs to fight the ghosts.
When the story was pitched to the director and producer of this 1984 classic, Ivan Reitman, he liked the idea but felt the script was off. So Harold Ramis came on board, and he and Aykroyd worked on the script, making it more realistic and toned down.
The movie’s plot is about three unemployed parapsychology scientists who get fired from their university jobs for their weird behavior and obsession with the paranormal. The trio—Dr. Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Dr. Raymond Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), and Dr. Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis)—decide to rent an old firehouse to set up shop and start trapping ghosts, spirits, and poltergeists for money. They hire an extra hand in Winston Zeddmore (Ernie Hudson) to help with the ghost-busting business.
But things take a turn for the worse when they stumble upon a gateway into another dimension, and an evil force waits to break free into this world. The group now has to save the world from this impending disaster.
The movie is a comedy, so the plot is thin, and many things are set up for comedic effect, plus it has a slow build up, so prep yourself.
The film was followed by a sequel, Ghostbusters II, in 1989, and the movie franchise grew to include two animated television series: one named The Real Ghostbusters, showcasing more adventures of the original four, and Extreme Ghostbusters, about a new team of busters mentored by Egon.
The characters were originally meant to be played by Belushi, Eddie Murphy, and John Candy. But Belushi died during the writing of the screenplay, and Murphy and Candy didn’t want the roles, so Aykroyd and Ramis rewrote the characters, took the roles themselves, and brought Bill Murray on board, an addition that was well-received.
Ghostbusters is a classic comedy/Sci-Fi movie that everyone should watch and own. The movie has so many details and so much fun that you’ll find yourself captivated by the whole idea of ghost-busting. The sequel was just as good.
