Lawless (2012)

4/10

Starring
Shia LaBeouf
Tom Hardy
Gary Oldman

Directed by John Hillcoat

Tom Hardy leads an ensemble cast in this movie that has all the potential to be a classic, but falls short by two points.

The movie drags you on and on with no plan to make you even enjoy it. The mastery in the tale and the cast were exceptional, but the execution is lacking in fun. It is plagued by violence that neither thrills you nor makes you blink.

Lawless is based on a 2008 novel, The Wettest County in the World, by Matt Bondurant, which is about three brothers — Jack, Forrest, and Howard Bondurant — who sold moonshine in Franklin County, Virginia, during Prohibition in the United States. The book itself is based on the true-life story of Bondurant’s grandfather and grand uncles.

The plot is about a bootlegging gang in Virginia who were dealing in moonshine successfully until the authorities decided to cut off some of their profits. This led to various gun, knife, and fist fights between the gang and the authorities.

I think the major problem with this movie is the fact that it is a somewhat true-life story. The director, trying hard not to divert too much from what he had penned down, made this movie stiff. Except for Shia, every other character was stiff. Gary Oldman's reason for being in this flick, to me, was to help sell tickets, as his influence in this movie can be overlooked.

Before this movie, Tom Hardy appeared as the supervillain Bane in Christopher Nolan's film The Dark Knight Rises. His performance there was a step below here, but the Dark Knight movie was way above what this one could ever imagine it could be. Shia LaBeouf, on the other hand, has a long list of greats that include The Transformers, Indiana Jones, and Eagle Eye. LaBeouf, to me, is losing it in the realm of his movies. Along his path is a movie called The Nymphomaniac, which, from its name, you can guess is going to be an erotic soft porn. Hey, it is being made by Lars von Trier, so definitely it will be an erotic soft porn.

Although Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, and Gary Oldman are exceptional actors in their own right, their combination was not enough to save this movie.

I can’t advise you to waste your time watching this movie, but I can advise you to stay clear of it and invest your time in something else.
